In 2014 the annual Melbourne Writer's Festival will run from August 21st to 31st. This will be its 28th year, and in that time it has cemented its place as the premier literary festival in Melbourne.
The festival is ambitious in scope, design and influence. As their website states; "Enjoy the ideas and stories on offer, engage and be entertained. This festival is about questioning our place in the world, as men and women; as lovers, friends and partners; as workers and 'economic units', and as global citizens.
Our program addresses questions about liberty and responsibility; it takes inspiration from beautifully told stories; it listens to startling newcomers and intellectual heavyweights; it revels in literary coups and writerly gossip; and it celebrates words and language and hence, life."

Twenty-one pieces of fantastic Australian literature are vying for the 2014 Premier's Award. There is $25,000 up for grabs in each of the five categories; Fiction, Non Fiction, Drama, Poetry, and Young Adult. Winners then go into the running for the "single most valuable literary award in the country" - the Victorian Prize for Literature.
This year, for the first time, the Awards are presented in January, a change which aims to improve the profile of the Awards nationally and internationally.
Winners will be announced on January 28th, and you can have your say by voting in the People's Choice Award.
Is that the works of Shakespeare you've written there, dear monkey?
