Wristcutters: A Love Story - Film Review

I recently found Wristcutters: A Love Story on a list of 'films you probably haven't seen' and was a little saddened as it has long been one of my favourite films. Wristcutters is the tale of two young people with lots of potential who didn't know who they were before they met each other, arguably like all love stories.



After a devastating break-up, Zia (Patrick Fugit) commits suicide only to wake up in an even more desolate existence, a barren wasteland entirely habituated by fellow suicides. This world is an endless stream of low-paying menial jobs, static-filled television and bleakness. Zia becomes employed at a Japanese pizza place run by a Russian and exists without enjoyment for a while before discovering that his ex-girlfriend Desiree (Leslie Bibb) killed herself mourning his own death. Filled with guilt and a newfound hope for happiness he sets off on a road trip with the closest thing he can get to a friend, electrocuted Russian rocker Eugene (Shia Whigham)



They don't get very far before seeing a hitchhiker, the beautiful Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) is looking to go in the same direction as the boys to visit 'The People In Charge' to make a complaint, her suicide was an accident and she would like this oversight to be corrected ASAP. Thought butting heads initially, the journey is their opportunity to get to know each other and they find themselves taking risks for each other, a falling a little harder despite themselves.



With beautiful people, detailed sets, social satire, and a little bit of magic; Wristcutters is the meaning of life after death. There aren't a lot of movies that can be called smart and still have a good message. Wristcutters may have a bleak premise, but the message of love is strong and pure. It is pure unadulterated peace in the land of the hopeless I don't want to spoil the ending but it is all kinds of heart warming.

Wristcutters is a clever, intricate and surprisingly touching film, filled with black comedy and realistic characters that are truly heartbreaking. I show it to everyone I can without pushing too hard and it has overcome every apprehension. I definitely recommend it for movie nights, dates or a rental for yourself on a night in.
