Located at Matthew Flinders Drive, Cooee Bay, only a short drive from Yeppoon town centre, Wreck Point Scenic Lookout is a place to visit. Officially unveiled on 17 June 2017, Wreck Point Scenic Lookout offers beautiful views of Capricorn Coast and Keppel Bay.
Some interpretive panels around the lookout will tell you about Yeppoon Lion Club, Lieutenant Matthew Flinders and his expedition near this area, the discovery of Keppel Bay by Captain James Cook, stories and history about local Aborigine people - the Darumbal, and also a plague about 42 Australian Infantry Battalion and their involvement during WWII.
There are some benches at the lookout to sit on but this place is not wheelchair friendly as it has uneven ground and some steps to reach the lookout. In the middle of the lookout, there is a stone table with a map that will show you islands that can be seen from the lookout and some beaches around this area.
There is a walking trail to go to the beach at the bottom of the lookout, with only 60 metres and 68 sandstone steps. A shipwreck artwork is located in the middle of this walking trail with a viewing platform not far from it. Near the shipwreck artwork, you can find a drinking water fountain and an interpretive panel that tells the story of the Selina, a 62-tonne transport schooner that was found waterlogged and dismasted, washed ashore near this point, by Captain Roach of the cutter Will-o'-the-Wisp in October 1848. This is how this place is called Wreck Point.
There is parking near the lookout and in the busy season, parking might be a problem. Wear comfy walking shoes if you are planning to do the walking tracks and go to the viewing platform. If the weather is wet, walking down the walking tracks might be very slippery.
