Taking your dog as your date to the movies is generally frowned upon- but not so at Melbourne's drive-in cinemas.

A little-known fact about the Coburg Drive-In Cinema and the Lunar Drive-In Cinema in Dandenong is that they are both pet-friendly.

At the Coburg Drive-In Cinema, dogs must be kept in your vehicle during your visit. The Lunar Drive-In is even more pet friendly ; your dog can even leave the car provided he or she is secured on a leash. Of course, you will have to clean up any messes your dog leaves behind.

The golden rule is to keep your dog from preventing other patrons from enjoying the movie, so your dog will need to be well-behaved and able to sit through the film without constantly barking.

That other drive-in cinema within reach of Melbourne, the Dromana 3 Drive-In takes a slightly harsher line on four-legged guests; a call ahead of time will hopefully avoid the situation of having to hide Fido in the foot well.

If drive-in cinemas are not your style, dogs are welcome at some seasonal open-air cinemas, such as the Moonlight Cinema .

While not a dog-parent myself, I can certainly see the appeal in bringing your dog to the movies. Not having to worry about how your dog is doing at home, all alone, would be a big plus. I am also not convinced it would be a good idea to bring my cat to the drive-in. If you have a more adventurous cat that would enjoy a night out, please leave a comment and let me know how it goes!

Would you bring your dog to watch a film at the drive-in?
