We've all done it; driven to the snow and stopped for lunch or dinner at McDonalds, but it doesn't need to be as mundane as that. Make the drive as enjoyable as the rest of the trip.

Without adding much extra travel time, select somewhere that will please the whole family to stop, revive, survive.

Grandma's Little Bakery, Collector . Known as Grandma's at the Farm, this offers a playground as well as hearty home cooked food and fabulous pies. Lunch only.

Brodburger, Kingston . This fabulous burger joint is quick and excellent. Bound to keep the kids happy too. Spare a few minutes at the end to stroll over to Jack Ross Park . Get some fresh air and stretch your legs before hitting the road again. Lunch or dinner.

Monster Kitchen & Bar . This one takes a little longer, and unless the kids have sophisticated palates, it may just be a bowl of chips and ice cream for them, but this meal will definitely make the drive worthwhile. Lunch or dinner.

A slight detour, but lunch at the National Arboretum Sprout Café has the added bonus of stunning views and access to the best playground in Canberra. Lunch.

From 12 noon until 3pm, Bicicletta Pizza Window is open Monday to Friday, if you want to grab a quick takeaway slice or panini to eat in the courtyard behind the Peppers Gallery Hotel. Lunch.

Make the journey worthwhile. With some planning, and a little effort, your holiday can begin as soon as you leave home.
