On Saturday the 9th of June 2018 people around the world will be picking up their knitting needles to take part in this year's World Wide Knit in Public Day.

The event first took place in 2005, and was created as a way for knitters to catch up with other people in their community who also enjoy knitting.

Since 2005, the event has taken off and is now being celebrated around the world in countries such as Australia, Norway, Ireland, South Africa, China, Sweden, the United States, plus many others.

There are a number of events taking place throughout Australia this year for knitters (and crocheters) of all abilities.

Here are some of the events on offer:

Please note that while most of the events take place on Saturday the 9th of June, some events are scheduled earlier, on the Thursday or Friday.

Victoria:
Saturday 9th of June, 12pm-4pm. Knitters of all abilities are welcome and yarn, needles etc are provided for those starting out. All items knitted on the day will be donated to charity.
Saturday 9th of June, 11am - 3:30pm
Saturday 9th of June 2018, 10:30am - 1pm
Thursday 7th of June 2018 from 10:30am-1pm
Saturday 9th of June, 11am-3pm. Children and beginners are welcome.
Saturday 9th of June, 9:30am-2pm
Saturday 9th of June, 10:30am
Learn to knit or crochet. Wool and needles/hooks will be provided.


ACT:
Saturday 9th of June 1pm-4pm
Saturday 9th of June, 10:30am - 2:30pm


New South Wales:
Saturday 9th of June, 12:30pm - 3pm
Saturday 9th of June, 10am-2pm. The event will include knitting, socialising, and teaching others, while enjoying tea, coffee and cake.
Friday 8th of June, 10am-2pm

Queensland:
Saturday 9th of June, 10:30am-2:30pm. Knitters and crocheters of all abilities are welcome and lucky door prize, tea and coffee and snacks provided.


South Australia:
Saturday 9th of June 2018, from 10am - 2pm.
Saturday 9th of June, 2pm-4:30. Afternoon tea will be provided

Western Australia:
Saturday 9th of June, 7am - 12pm

Knitting for a Cause
If you're unsure about what to knit on the day, there are a number of organisations and charities in Australia who are looking for volunteers to knit items such as beanies, toys, blankets and more. Here are just some of the many knitting projects currently around the country:

Australia-Wide
Knit One, Give One - There are drop-off points in Victoria, and Lindcraft stores accept donations in all of their stores (Australia-wide)

Angel Blanket Australia Inc
This organisation is collecting knitted blankets in the following sizes: 40cm x 40cm, 60cm x 60cm or 80cm x 80cm.

Hope Bears
The charity has over 7000 volunteers, knitting times such as socks, mittens, beanies and gloves, which are donated to over 40 hospitals & 4 Ronald McDonald Houses.

New South Wales
The Knitters' Guild NSW have an extensive list of organisations that are seeking donations of knitted toys, beanies, blankets, gloves, singlets, Possum and macropod pouches, and more.

Wrap With Love - This organisation is based in NSW, however donations of wraps, yarn or knitted squares can be posted from anywhere in Australia.

Western Australia
Tiny Sparks - Sew and knit items for the Neonatal Unit

Womens and Infants Research Foundation - Knit items for the babies in the King Edward Memorial Hospital special care nurseries.

South Australia
Walk with Wings' 'Knit and Stitches' program. Knitted items can be dropped off in Rosewater South Australia or posted from anywhere in Australia.
