Each year, February 2nd marks International World Wetlands Day as this was the day "The Convention on Wetlands" was officially adopted in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Here in Brisbane, we are lucky enough to have plenty of wetlands nearby to celebrate. Boondall Wetlands lie on the edge of Moreton Bay, between Nudgee Beach and Shorncliffe, covering 1000 hectares of tidal flats, mangroves, salt marshes, grasslands and woodlands. They provide shelter for a great diversity of wildlife, which are waiting to be explored.

The United Nations have declared 2013 "International Year of Water Cooperation", providing an ideal opportunity to ensure the planet's fragile wetland ecosystems remain protected and well managed for generations to come.

Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre is hosting 4 free World Wetland Day activities and all are welcome to attend.

1. Creative Creatures - Saturday, Feburary 2nd, 10.30am - 12 pm: A short guided walk exploring the wetlands followed by a fun art and craft activity making your very own wetlands themed creations. Suitable for ages 6 - 12 years, children must be supervised at all times.

2. Guided Walk - Saturday, February 2nd, 1.45pm - 3.45pm: Celebrate World Wetlands Day by joining volunteer interpretive guides on a nature walk through the wetlands along the Billai Dhagun Circuit (meaning "Place of She Oaks"). Discover why Boondall Wetlands are considered internationally significant and find out more about this beautiful natural environment on Brisbane's back doorstep.

3. Catchment Cleanup - Sunday, Februrary 3rd, 9.30am - 11.30am: Join Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre Staff and volunteers in a clean up program and help protect this unique wetland ecosystem. Light morning tea provided.

4. Useful Plants Trail Walk - Sunday, February 3rd, 2 - 3.30pm: Join a volunteer guide for a short informative walk around Tulla-yugaipir Dhagun (meaning "Place of Useful Plants" ) Track at Boondall Environment Centre. Learn about some of the wetland plants and their traditional uses followed by a short, simple tasting session of the bush tucker foods. Children must be supervised by an accompanying adult.
