Have you made plans for World Vasectomy Day yet? You'd better hurry as it's next week. Before you book out some time in your diary, and perhaps invite some friends to join you, let me tell you about something pretty unique you can do to mark the occasion.
You can watch an American vasectomist go about his business right here in Adelaide. He'll be accompanied by other doctors, writers and thought leaders to highlight the contribution men who get the snip make to families, communities and the planet.
There are three ways of participating in the 'vasectomy-athon'.
1. You can
become a member of the sponsoring organisation RIAus then book tickets in the live audience.
2. You can register to
request a free vasectomy as part of the 'vasectomy-athon'. OR
3. You can watch from the comfort of your own home, as the good doctor will be
streaming live around the world, answering questions as he operates.
While it sounds whacky, it's in a good cause.
Dr Doug Stein is the subject of a documentary premiering at the Adelaide Film Festival this week. His mission is to 'save the planet one vasectomy at a time'. He'll be joined by other doctors, writers and thinkers including Australian
'Dr Snip' .
You can tune into three different 90 minute sessions, starting with the techniques of no-scalpel surgery, from 1pm. From 3 pm, the focus moves to social and cultural issues: the fears, social stigmas and myths behind the 'snip or not to snip' decision. The final session, starting at 5.30 pm, considers political and ethical issues like population growth and human sustainability.
It sounds like a strange hybrid of Q&A, Insight and RPA. Worth tuning in for part of it at least?
