Running over 11 days from 13-23 February, WTF14 is a Festival of contemporary performance that is well worth a visit. Here are some of the reasons why.
1. The shows
Since its launch in 2010, the World Theatre Festival (now rebranded as WTF) has showcased many new and innovative shows from around the world. It is a festival about stopping to celebrate the diversity of international theatre practice and, as such, the 2014 line-up features 11 shows from as far afield as Ireland and South Korea.
WTF's 2014 program offers something for everyone – from the contemporary dance opera experience "Abandon" and the solo show "A Boy and His Soul", which explores the concept of music as a life soundtrack, to the grand puppetry of "Wedhus Gembel" and the acrobatic odyssey "She Would Walk the Sky", a story told above, in and around the audience.
2. The spectacle
Featuring works that challenge the traditional definitions of theatre, WTF14 brings together shows unlike any others. Ireland's Pan Pan Theatre's production of Samuel Beckett's radio play "All That Fall" features audiences listening from an installation of 60 rocking chairs amongst surround sound and ambient lighting.
And Motherboard Production's "&

#54616 ; Underground", sees a pop-up Korean speakeasy bursting to life each night with live music and magical storytelling.
3. The atmosphere
Like any cultural celebration, WTF14 is not only about the individual shows; it's also about sharing the experience. This adds a sense of exhilaration to the air of the Brisbane Powerhouse spaces. To complement this, after the "&

4. The Venue
The Brisbane Powerhouse aims to bring people together to create an arts experience and, as such, it offers audiences a diverse range of spaces in which to see theatre, from the versatile Visy theatre to the Stores Rehearsal Room which is hosting the immersive circus experience "The Great Spavaldos".
There is also much to delight in the discovery of the nooks and crannies of the historic venue (which was once a working power station, then left abandoned), painted with authentic graffiti and eclectic artworks.
Parking is free, though might involve a walk up Lamington Street and free wi-fi is a bonus for those who like to hang out and absorb the atmosphere pre, post and between shows.
5. The night out
With so many performances spaces from which to showcase the ensemble of WTF14 shows, it is possible to schedule attendance at multiple shows in an evening, resulting in a truly memorable night out. (Purchasing tickets to three or more WTF shows usually enables a discount).
And Brisbane Powerhouse offers dining options from the waterfront modern Australian Watt Restaurant and Bar (whose menu includes a dedicated pre-theatre offering) to the Simply Italian Bar Alto.
There is everything you need for a rewarding adventure in the world of theatre festivillany.
