Every year, the renowned Sony World Photography Awards showcases the most awe-inspiring photos from around the globe to the public. Created by the World Photography Organisation, it is one of the world's leading photography competitions and an authoritative voice in the industry.
The Award celebrates the finest contemporary photography from the past year by giving international exposure, visibility and opportunity to photographers from all over the world. It consist of four competitions, namely:
1) Professional - 10 categories judged upon a body of work of 5 to 10 images
2) Open – best single images across 10 categories
3) Youth - young photographers aged 12-19 years responding to a brief with a single image
4) Student Focus – for those studying photography
The free-to-enter 2018 edition is now open for entries, providing more opportunities than ever before for amateur and professional photographers in
Sydney .
Highlights of the 2018 Awards include:
Professional photographers can look forward to 2 new categories, namely 'Creative' and 'Discovery'. Judges will be looking for originality, experimentation and imagination.These challenging categories provide an opportunity for award-winners to secure a grant to fund future photographic projects.
New Sony Grant for those participating in the Professional and Student Focus competitions. Winners of the Professional category may receive grants of USD7,000 to pursue photographic projects of their choice while the shortlisted photographers in the Student category will each be given USD3,500 to work together on a new photographic commission set by Sony and the World Photography Organisation.
All category winners including many of the shortlisted Awards photographers will receive international exposure. Their works will be showcased at the annual Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London and then toured internationally. The exhibition had travelled to Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Milan, New York , Beijing and Melbourne .
All shortlisted and winning photographers are given worldwide exposure via dedicated marketing and press campaigns, and winning images will be published in the annual Awards winners' book.
Sony will be giving out digital imaging equipment to all category winners of the Professional, Open, Youth and Student Focus competitions.
Cash prizes of USD25,000 will be presented to the Photographer of the Year and USD5,000 to the overall Open competition winner.
