If you are wondering who Margot McKinney is then here is your answer - a Queensland woman who has made her life's work the creation of the most stunning jewellery from many of the gemstones in Australia as well as South Sea Pearls.

Her family background and life take up a small part of the exhibition and it is worth noting that their history goes back several generations to the first McKinney who came over from Ireland in the 1880s and made his fortune in prospecting gold. They set up a thriving business in Toowoomba and then took over a jewellery shop. Margot began her designing in 2007 and expanded into the American markets with exquisite jewellery sourcing the best stones and pearls from the finest that Australia has to offer. The real jewel in this crown is her ability to masterfully create the kind of jewellery which reflect and enhances the beauty of the gemstones and the nature from which they are taken. So flowers and petals are prominent as well as bows and whole colliers resembling a ring of flowers.

Many of these pieces are simply out of most people's reach. There is a display of some well-known personalities wearing some of her jewellery and I believe that Julie Bishop is a big fan.

Opals as they are found

For me wandering around this beautiful exhibition was particularly lovely as it showed the opals from Australia being used in some exquisite pieces. These were, by far, my favourite pieces.

There were many pieces with other gemstones which take their inspiration from flowers, trees, seeds or nature in general and they too are simply stunning.

Take a few moments to listen to the story of how South Sea Pearls are farmed and harvested. It's a long and complicated process involving planting the seed in the shell and harvesting after a period of several years and then grading the pearls according to their shape and lustre. It is quite a fascinating process.

Go along and imagine yourself being given the opportunity to choose a piece to wear and then decide which one you are going to go for. I have provided a few options for you
The exhibition is on until the 6th of November and it is ticketed.
