Did you even realise that World Naked Gardening Day is an actual 'event'? It sure is! Held on the first Saturday in May every year, 2025, marks the twenty-first annual World Naked Gardening Day. Wow! What an idea! How does one 'dress' for the occasion? Or is it simply, less is more, so un-dress for the occasion.

At this 'stranger than fiction' or 'too good to be true' (depending on which side of the fence you sit on ... ouch!) occasion - the annual World Naked Gardening Day encourages people from all over the world to get out and about to do some gardening. The only pre-requisite is that avid gardeners need to 'dress' for the occasion or in this case, un-dress! One can really believe that this momentous occasion must have been created in the Northern Hemisphere, as the first Saturday of May would be in early Spring, but for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, temperatures could be reaching 'a tad cold'.

Why gardening in your birthday suit, you may ask? Well, apparently it's fun! Secondly, after swimming, gardening is at the top of family-friendly activities that people are most ready to consider doing nude. It's also an opportunity to move towards a healthy (albeit naked) sense of self-body acceptance and our connection to Mother Nature. Gardening in the 'altogether' allows us - even if only for a few sun kissed moments - to be honest with who we are, show acceptance for our bodies (creases and all) and to move forward with a healthy sense of self-awareness towards our bodies within a natural environment.

World Naked Gardening Day has no political agenda, nor is it owned or organised by any one particular group. Naked individuals and groups are encouraged to adopt the day for themselves.

So, what should you do?

On Saturday the 3rd May 2025, find an opportunity to get naked and do some gardening. Do your gardening alone, with friends, with family, with your gardening club or with any other group, who are keen on gardening in the altogether. You can garden indoors - with pot plants; you can garden in your back yard; you can pull a few weeds on a hiking trail; at a city park or on the streets. Stay private or go public; make it a quiet pensive time or make a public splash - whichever way you choose to go, just get naked and play your part to ensure our botanical world is a healthier and more attractive place.

The next thing to do on the agenda for World Naked Gardening Day, is to tell someone about your experience. It's not important who you tell, but just that you have told SOMEONE! How about putting your thoughts to paper and emailing your local newspaper - this is the way to spread this dressy 'occasion' word!

Events like World Naked Gardening Day can help develop a sense of community amongst people from all walks of life. Participating in something that is bigger than one household, naturist group or gardening club can move gardeners with an au natural joie de vivre - joy of living naturally - towards becoming a community. And in the case of World Naked Gardening Day, it's fun, it's free, there are not too many risks involved (unless somebody dobs you in) and it reminds us of our connection to the natural world, and for a day in time, benefits our environment.

The other fabulous thing about gardening is that anybody and everybody can get involved - no matter if you are young, old, single, part of a group, fit or infirm, a city-dweller or a bundu-basher - gardening is an activity enjoyed by most.

"When you're out there with a gentle breeze on you, every last hair on your body feels it. You feel completely connected with the natural world in a way you just can't in clothes" - Barbara Pollard of Abbey House Gardens, a happy participant of World Naked Gardening Day.

Bookmark the first Saturday of May and un-dress for the occasion!
