Feeling depressed about the world situation? Stressed about work, school or health problems? Or maybe you're just feeling a bit bored with everyday life. There's a remedy for all the above, one that research has shown will reduce stress, burn calories, lower blood pressure and leave you feeling great. Even better, it's free, it's fun and available everywhere. What is this magic tonic? It's laughter! Find out for yourself on Sunday 7 May when Laughter WA Inc hosts a picnic to celebrate World Laughter Day.
Laughter WA is the umbrella organisation for Laughter Yoga clubs throughout the state. Laughter Yoga was developed in India in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor, and his wife Madhuri, a yoga teacher. Dr Kataria was interested in the growing body of scientific evidence showing that laughter is beneficial to mental and physical health. He organised a small group to tell jokes which worked until they ran out of material. Dr. Kataria then decided to try pretend laughter. He asked the group members to act out laughter with him for one minute. Soon they were all laughing heartily and Laughter Yoga was born. Today there are more than 6,000 clubs worldwide.
Laughter Yoga is a group session of aerobic activity which turns fake laughter into real laughter. It consists of hand-clapping rhythms, breathing exercises and playful laughter exercises. It's suitable for all ages and doesn't require any special clothing or equipment.
All around the world, the first Sunday in May is celebrated as World Laughter Day. Come along to the Laughter WA celebration and join thousands of other laughers in over 100 countries on the same day.
