The
World Firefighter's Games is exactly what it sounds like: firefighters from around the world competing against each other in a series of sporting competitions, just like at the Olympics. This year, the Games are taking place in Sydney and will last ten days, from Friday October 19 to Sunday October 28. It will be the 12th year of the biennial competition, with the event beginning in Auckland in 1990.
The World Firefighter's Games encourages all sorts of firefighters to compete, including full-time, part-time, volunteer and rural Firefighters, aviation, military, paramedics, State Emergency Services, St John's Ambulance, administrative and trade staff and even direct family members. I you fit any of these categories, you're in luck, as
registration is still open for some of the 70 events that will make make up the Games. There is something to cater for all ages and fitness levels.
The World Firefighter's Games will take place all over the Sydney this year. At the Sydney Olympic Park, facilities created for the 2000 Olympics will be used for World's Toughest Firefighter Alive event, swimming, track and field, archery and tennis. At the Games Village at Pyrmont Foreshore, there will be dodgeball, darts, bucket brigade, horseshoes and tug-of-war.
Elsewhere, the Randwick Council area will host many outdoor sports. Beaches such as Maroubra and Coogee will be the location for surfing, Surf Lifesaving, beach volleyball, beach cricket and the open water swim. Sydney's football fields will also host a soccer competition. A full schedule of event can be found

While there are plenty of sports to enjoy, the Games are as much a party as a competition. The Pyrmont harbour foreshore will be the centre of celebrations, hosting the Games Village and a range of entertainment marquees. There will be live entertainment held here every night of the event, as well as food outlets, a cocktail lounge, a beer garden and a night club. The social calendar can he found
here .
There will also be an Opening Ceremony featuring Diesel, the traditional parade of athletes and a spectacular fireworks display, held at Cockle Bay on October 19 and continuing at the Games Village afterwards. Entry to the event will be free but donations can be made to the Games' official charity partner, The Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital in Westmead. A Closing Celebration will be held at Pyrmont Bay Park on October 28, with performances from Josh McIvor and Australian Idol 2005 finalist, Dan Spillane. A Closing Dinner will take place at Doltone House, with tickets costing around $100.
