Did you know that drinking a cup of coffee now can help make sure there's coffee for the future?

Yep, that's right!

More than 1.2 million people from around the world will come together between 13-15 May to participate in the . Supported by Fairtrade , the Challenge is calling on people across the globe to raise their cup of caffeine goodness all in the name of protecting our favourite beverage.

So if you're a coffee lover you might want to head to the event website to sign up as an event host (and also register for a free Event Host Kit including Fairtrade coffee and chocolate), or make a pledge that you will drink Fairtrade coffee. Cafés across the country are also getting on-board, with Brisbane's Canter & Colt serving up delicious Montville coffee .

Robert Mystek from Canter & Colt is proud to be involved in the Challenge and knows making the best choices in his business now will have big impact in the future.

"Being a 100% organic cafe, we are passionate about supporting the local community and being as sustainable as possible," Mystek says.

"We choose to serve Montville's Fairtrade coffee as it aligns with our values of supporting small scale farmers and having a positive broader impact on communities and the environment globally."

So, how will it help, you ask? Climate change is a threat to coffee crops around the world. Arabica coffee, which turns out to be Australia's favourite variety, is quite a sensitive crop. In the same way that we like our coffee just the right temperature, the coffee plant also thrives in the right conditions. But as we see the world's temperatures increasing, the area coffee can be grown is decreasing.

The global event aims to raise awareness of the issue facing some of the most vulnerable farmers in the world and also highlight how we can help. When farmers sell their coffee through the Fairtrade system they also receive an additional amount of money (which is called the Fairtrade Premium) that can be used to help benefit their farms, communities and families. More and more these coffee farmers are investing this additional money into training, organic pesticides and new coffee plants (to replace old and damaged crops) to combat the impact of climate change.

So why not host an office morning tea, have your friends over, or make your way to Canter & Colt or any San Churro store, to make sure our liquid gold will be around long into the future, and help secure the livelihood for the 125 million coffee farmers around the world.
