What is World Environment Day?

Not to be confused with World Naked Gardening Day (different weekend), World Environment Day is the United Nations' most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since World Environment Day's inception in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in more than one hundred countries. More importantly, World Environment Day serves as a day for the people - that's us - to do something to take care of the earth, whether it be focused locally, nationally or globally, it can be an action done on one's own or as part of a crowd - everybody has the freedom of choice.

Every World Environment Day is organised around a specific theme that focuses attention on a particularly urgent environment concern and for 2019 the focused theme is 'Join us to fight air pollution!'

The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) and environmental advocates of the Sunshine Coast have been getting together every year since 1979, in the first week of June to celebrate World Environment Day. The World Environment Day Festival has grown into the Sunshine Coast region's biggest environmental event and holds the title of the longest running event of its kind in South East Queensland. In 2012 this auspicious festival achieved one of five categories in the UNEP World Environment Day challenge, giving the Sunshine Coast's World Environment Day Festival international recognition.

Visitors to the World Environment Day Festival in 2019 will enjoy a programme bursting at the seams with activities, including -

  • entertaining performances
  • children's activities
  • farm expo
  • renewables village
  • arts and crafts
  • sustainable fashion
  • innovative displays
  • workshops .... plus
  • more than thirty environment and community groups to connect with
  • At the time of writing, the World Environment Day Festival programme for 2019 had not yet been released. Please use this link to view the programme when it comes out.

    Festival Trail**

This year's Festival Trail at the World Environment Day Festival, will be an interactive journey that will motivate festival-goers, young and old, to actively participate in fun activities at numerous stalls throughout the festival. Each stop on the trail will provide a better understanding of a particular environmental issue and participants will be encouraged to learn more about the various community groups involved. The Festival Trail will also showcase an array of hands-on activities, allowing attendees to create a fun, sustainable and exciting product to take home at the end of the day. Stay tuned here for more information.

Good Harvest Food & Farm Expo

Mick Dan's Good Harvest Food & Farm Expo is coming back this year for the World Environment Day Festival. The Good Harvest Food & Farm Expo is hosting a programme of speakers throughout the day, who will share their knowledge of practical solutions for the home; the benefits of buying 'local' and the beauty of veggies. Locally grown produce, as well as thirst-quenching refreshments, will be available - we all know that buying 'local' is a great way to reduce plastic consumption, whilst supporting a local business. Festival goers will get the opportunity to really engage with the local organic growers and learn some new habits to be used in the kitchen.

Stay tuned here for more information and speakers programme that's still in the pipeline.

    Children's Forest

Who says learning about the environment isn't fun! The Children's Forest is a magical hub of creativity and laughter, where children will learn about and interact with the environment. Every activity in the Children's Forest is based around connections to nature and healthy practices, so whether the children are painting with veggies, tree planting or attending wildlife shows, the plentiful activities will engage every young environment warrior.

    Some of 2018's activities were:
  • Petal perfume making
  • Bush critter eco art
  • Potato printing
  • Seedling planting

  • Please follow this link for 2019 activities, still to be announced.

    Renewables Expo & Village

This year, 2019, The Sunshine Coast Climate Action Now (SCCAN) are planning to showcase a working renewables village, linking solar and wind power with battery storage and electric vehicles, as well as a small dwelling. Local businesses and organisations with an interest in renewable energy, will also be displaying their products and services.

In keeping with 'ethical, sustainable, fresh and wholesome' the World Environment Day Festival will be supporting a sustainable future by promoting food and drink from ethically-sourced and conscious business. Food is a key element to any festival and every year the World Environment Day Festival organisers carefully select a wide variety of food to cater for the needs of festival-goers and for 2019 the festival will be a vegan and vegetarian event.

Plant-based food isn't about lentils and spices anymore, it has more to do with tantalising tastebuds and challenging festival-goers with new approaches to food. Please click here to discover what deliciously, decadent food will be at the World Environment Day Festival in 2019.
