**Celebrate World Bartenders Day on February 24 2021 to recognise and say thank you to those skilled professionals who gladly ask "what can I get you" and pour your drinks. /B]

.

What is a bartender?
A bartender is the person who prepares or serves alcoholic (and some non-alcoholic beverages) from behind a licensed bar. They are sometimes referred to as mixologists, as they make and mix drinks including some pretty fancy schmancy cocktails but also pour the perfect beer with just enough froth.

You know the bartender when you see them. They are the ones, standing behind the bar, sometimes with a classic white towel slung over their shoulder, shining glasses and waiting to take your order.

Like baristas and chefs, a good bartender is worth their weight in gold in creating a memorable night out. They are also a social connector. Don't be surprised if you grab a stool at the bar and find yourself having a heart to heart conversation where you share your problems and innermost thoughts with this complete stranger as they pour you a drink. As Michael Petersen once said,"You know you're in trouble, when the bartender cries"

So, how can you celebrate World Bartenders Day?

Visit one of Brisbane's leading bars
Brisbane is spoilt for choice when it comes to some of the countries best bars. From the city to the suburbs, here are a couple to check out:

- The Gresham Whiskey Bar which took out the National Australian Bar of the Year at the 2019 Australian Bartender Magazine Awards and Australian Industry Awards, in Queen Street, Brisbane. With loads of character, The Gresham is housed in a late Victorian sandstone building with vintage decor and a fireplace.

- Mr Percivals is an overwater bar under Brisbane's' Story Bridge with a pretty pastel palette and great outdoor setting offering one of the best views of the river city.

- Brooklyn Standard in Eagle Street, Brisbane, a cosy New York-themed basement bar offering cocktails and live bands playing blues, funk and soul.

Watch a movie
Bartenders have featured heavily in films over many decades. From westerns to romantic comedies, you may find the bartenders taking in the scenes. If you can't make it to a bar in person, you could stay in and watch one or more of these popular movies:

• Cocktail starring Tom Cruise
• Coyote Ugly
• St Elmo's Fire
• Barfly
• Trees Lounge

Whether you visit a bar and extend your warm wishes personally as you order a cheeky cocktail, wine or beer or simply watch a movie from the comfort of your home, be sure to commemorate World Bartenders Day and say an extra thank you for the work they do and for the role they play in our social structures.
