If you love all things coffee and you think you have what it takes to make the best coffee in the world, then I have a program for you - it is the World Barista Championship, AASCA Barista Buddy Program.

However if you're not quite sure that your coffee is quite up there with the best, you can still be part of this amazing experience by becoming a barista buddy. It is a fun program that is designed to put together the World Barista Championship competitors in Melbourne for the final experience with a buddy.

The idea is that the international competitors arriving in Melbourne will experience first-hand the passion for specialty coffee that exists in Australia, plus they will have a single person to contact to assist with the coordination of all their requirements and giving them a warm Melbourne welcome. Thus ensuring that they have a safe and enjoyable time in our country.

Each barista will be allocated a buddy who will contact them and essentially be there correspondent in Melbourne. This buddy of theirs will assist them with any questions leading up to their departure and also during the entire competition, including visa and custom inquiries, right through to the more day to day inquiries, such as how the public transport system works and where they can get the ingredients that they may require.

So do you think you have what it takes to become a barista buddy?

If you have a connection to the coffee or hospitality industry, this is a definite advantage. Whilst it is an English speaking competition it is also encouraged for buddies to speak other languages. You must hold a current driver's license and be available from the 16th of May through to the 26th May 2013.

What is required of you once you become a barista buddy?

As well as assisting in the lead up to the competition, you will assist with anything to do with your barista's stay in Melbourne. You will need to keep in touch with your barista via email or Facebook in the lead up to the competition to answer any questions they may have and familiarise yourself with questions regarding visas and what they are legally allowed and not allowed to bring into the country through customs.

You may need to assist with accommodation and general Melbourne questions, including public transport, what foods are in season at the moment and any other questions they may have. It is important that you answer all of the questions in a timely manner.

Possibly, you may be required to pick up your barista from the airport and giving them a tour of Melbourne is highly desirable. You may be also required to assist in finding shops selling certain types of milks or ingredients for their signature drinks.

Why would you want to become a barista buddy?

You will gain an insightful perspective on the World Barista Championships and everything that is involved with them and you will have the chance to network with some of the industry's most amazing baristas who have connections all around the world.

You will be assisting putting Melbourne on the global map as a specialty coffee destination and if you have an interest in this field yourself, you can fast track your own pathway into the competitions.

And most importantly; you will have the opportunity to build your own coffee knowledge.

If this sounds like just the ticket for you
