Word Play is a school holiday activity space, located in the Ferguson Room at the National Library of Australia. This free activity space is designed for children aged 4 and over and has a range of stations around the room for kids to move from one activity to another. Word Play is open during most school holidays throughout the year and has a different theme each time. Some relate to an exhibition in the gallery and others have simply encouraged children to read, write, create and appreciate the written word.
This activity room is particularly popular in the summer school holidays as it is a cool room to escape the heat, with a cosy reading nook and a large "Connect Four" game to play, to allow the kids some quiet downtime in their holidays. For parents, it also means a well-earned rest, while the kids have a play and get creative. You can stay at Word Play for as little or as long as you like, so perhaps allow 30 minutes to an hour, to be able to try out each activity and have a rest in between.
My young daughter and I have visited the Word Play children's space a number of times over the last couple of years and each time there has been something different to do. There have been stations for colouring-in, paper lantern making, word-searches, drawing and writing activities, iPad games and over-sized family games to play. Each school holidays is different, so take the lift up to the Ferguson Room between 10am and 4pm daily and see what there is to discover...
Once you have explored all the free and fun activities of Word Play, why not take a walk through the gallery
exhibitions , stop for a milkshake at the
Bookplate Café , browse for children's books at the library
Bookshop and then walk down to Lake Burley Griffin to enjoy the views of the
Captain Cook Memorial Jet in the distance.
Canberra is fortunate to have so many free activities running each school holidays, so families can just drop-in when they are in the area - or are running out of ideas of things to do! Most of Canberra's museums and galleries have something free for the kids to get hands-on with, so why not explore all of Canberra's attractions and see what they have on offer.
The kids will love every minute!
