Enjoy a beer with a river view
Just 20kms, by road, from Renmark is a must-visit treasure on your next trip to the Riverland. You can drive to Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery but it's far more fun to arrive by boat. It's around one hour from Renmark by tinny or five hours by houseboat. You'll see directions on the riverbank as you approach.
As the Riverland's only independent craft brewery, the Woolshed has been offering a wide range of beers to thirsty locals since 2009. Hard Lemonade and Big Orange are popular choices but if you're unsure about what to choose, try four varieties for $20 on a Tasting Paddle'.
The brewery has no kitchen and therefore, no food menu but local food trucks visit on weekends and guests are welcome to bring their own picnic or use the free barbecue facilities at other times. Alternatively, guests can choose from a range of local produce to put together a platter.
All manner of watercraft from small kayaks to palatial houseboats can be seen during a lazy afternoon with an occasional flotilla of ducks or a pair of swans cruising past when the river traffic slows down.
There's inviting fun for children in the form of water play. I visited on a school day but in the absence of visiting children, I noticed more than one grown-up having fun with the water pump and sluice gates.
Woolshed Brewery is family-friendly and dogs are welcome as well as children. Two resident brewery dogs, Murray and Boof, are known to welcome boats on arrival at the river bank. The brewery is COVID-safe, of course, but has enough space inside, on outside lawns and across several large decks to host over seven hundred thirsty people.
