Every autumn, Woodstock holds its annual fleece festival around the third weekend in October. This is just a 1 hour 32 minute drive from Toronto, along Hwy 403, so an easy-access autumn day getaway for the whole Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and entire family.

The Fleece Festival is a great place to meet the farmers who produce sheep wool, alpaca fibre, cashmere goat hair yarns, silk and angora rabbit yarns, as well as many folks involved in production from raw fibre, hand-dyed yarns, online yarn vendors, through finished products like unique sweaters, hats and more.

The festival offers several workshops that run the gamut from traditional fibre arts such as spinning, weaving, and knitting, to even calligraphy and ukulele lessons!

Beginner fibre arts classes for kids are available too. To register for the children's workshops, please call 519-537-8411 (ext. 2901). You can even pay by phone.

Most of these workshops are held in the Mutual Market Building, but some are in the Auditorium Work Room.

So knitters, felters, spinners, and fibre artists, prepare for a great outing. I'm always looking for yarn for my next knitting project. This photo is of a pair of my handmade fingerless mittens made from Lion Brand's Amazing yarn line.

If you want to round out your visit to Woodstock, drop into the Woodstock Farmers' Market while you're there. They are open every Saturday from 7:00 am to Noon.

The Woodstock area is also considered the Dairy Capital of Canada and you will also find Gunn's Artisan Cheese Shop at 445172 Gunns Hill Road. They are open Monday-Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The owner and cheese maker, Shep Ysselstein, learned to make cheese in the Swiss Alps and brings this expertise to Gunn's cheeses.
