As I was driving through the Liverpool neighbourhood in search of some dinner one evening, I stumbled across Woodlands Tandoori restaurant. It was a weeknight so it was pretty quiet both inside the restaurant and outside considering George street in Liverpool had a couple of other restaurants too.

Parking was more difficult than I predicted considering the above, however eventually I managed to find a street park down the road, a short walk to the restaurant.

The menu at Woodlands seemed quite appetising, at a quick glance displayed on the window. The service of the staff that night was pleasant, although I did not exactly have much competition that evening.

The restaurant was playing some Indian Bollywood film tunes in the background, and the ambience reflected a relatively comfortable, family type of suburban restaurant setting; with the paintings and wall hangings reflecting the cultural background of the Indian cuisine.

I chose to have a channa batura that night, which is basically a chickpea curry in a smooth masala gravy accompanied with a deep fried bread in a circular shape; kind of like a large poori if you know what that is, but this bread being slightly thicker and stretchy. The curry tasted quite nice and the appropriate quantity was served for the two batura breads.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed with the batura that evening as it seemed to not have risen in the hot oil as it should have, and was rather hard and appeared slightly undercooked. The service staff however seemed to be happy to oblige with another batura instead when I pointed this out, and the second one was a lot better.

I also had a masala chai, a traditional Indian tea mixed with the aroma of Indian spices, which was as always very comforting and well made. The other thing I noticed with Woodlands Tandoori is that they had a separate counter on the right side once you walk in, displayed a variety of Indian snacks, particularly fried snacks such as crispy rice flour chips and other items, which are usually enjoyed with afternoon tea or tiffin.

The restaurant also offers take away options. Just beware that there is a minimum Eftpos spend requirement however, there is also an Eftpos machine right opposite the restaurant. The street and surrounding streets in Liverpool also have multiple Indian, Sri Lankan and Fiji Indian clothes, costume jewellery, music, grocery and spice shops where you could easily spend time during the day window or real shopping... perhaps for your next Bollywood party?
