The perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon with the kids
Woodlands Picnic Area
Woodlands Park

Before entering the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens, there is a path that leads to the Woodland Picnic Area.

This involves a 400 metre walk through a beautiful forest area, decorated with many trees and bushes, accompanied by a symphony of many birds.

Walking the path

There are plenty of picnic benches scattered throughout the walk, enabling those who may need a rest to take a break, or simply to sit back and be enveloped by the nature surrounding you.

A few signs along the way direct you to different hiking tracks and animals to watch out for, prevalently snakes, much to the delight of my son.

This path is perfect for the kids to ride their bikes or scooters along, being fairly flat the whole way.

Just before the picnic area, under the shade of large trees, there are a few tree stumps spread out in campfire-like arrangements, where you can sit away from the noise of the kids in the playground.

Once you reach the picnic area you will find a large field scattered with trees providing good shaded areas, as well as undercover picnic tables and public barbecues. There are also public toilets with a baby-change room.

Then there is a fantastic, sand-filled playground. This park has a very tall climbing apparatus, swings, slides, and a castle of sorts, with circular shovels attached to rope to allow for digging up the sand and reeling it up to fill the buckets embedded on a bench.

My children's favourite was the bouncing see saw, which they did not want to ever get off.

This area is a perfect way to spend a few hours. It is also a great idea for a children's birthday party as there is plenty of space for the kids to run around and plenty of picnic tables to sit at, but best of all it is totally FREE!

The Cranbourne Botanic Gardens are a terrific place for anybody to visit. adults and kids. Australia Gardens has a fair bit to offer the children too.
