Much more than just a wine store
If you like everything boutique and of the highest quality when it comes to your wine and beer, then you will love this delightful little shop tucked away from the main strip in Anslow street, Woodend.
Peering through the window at four beer bottles on the ledge, I was invited by bright and bubbly owner Caroline Bailey (or Caz as everyone calls her), to come in and check out the beer room.
The wine shop is 18 months new and has recently added beer and cider to their alcoholic repertoire.
All beer, cider and wine is carefully selected to ensure there is nothing but the best for patrons from select boutique wineries, breweries and cideries locally and internationally. Caz likes keeping the wine selection varied to keep the regulars happy with new wine to try all the time.
On this occasion, I was more interested in the beer selection as I have a fairly well stocked couple of wine racks. So it was straight to the beer room for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find beers that I hadn't heard of before such as Matso's monsoonal blonde from Broome brewery and La Sirene's Wild Saison style beer which is brewed out of Jamieson's brewery at Lake Eildon.
Friday evenings from 4pm to 8pm gives wine lovers the chance to come down and try some specially selected wines and if there is something in particular, you would like a taste of you may be able to convince Caz to open up a bottle of choice.
For something a little different, the Woodend Wine Store has teamed up with local chef Emma Chapple to put on a seasonal food and wine matching extravaganza. Food and wine lovers will be given a 6 course lunch feast which is matched with 12 wines for a bargain price of $140. The next one is being held on Sunday the 28th of April and is a taste of Autumn with produce and wines being selected to compliment the Autumn season.
I was so impressed with the knowledge and infectious enthusiasm that I will be sure to pop up from Melbourne regularly to get my wine, beer and cider fix from Woodend Wine Store.
