Midweek, my friend and I arrived at Harbour Town. Keen to shop and browse through many stores we decided to fill our systems with coffee and sugar and started to look through the menu at the Wooden Spoon . This cafe has been open for two years and is located undercover in the middle of Harbour Town, across from Bed Bath and Table, Witchery and Calvin Klein. With friendly staff, amazing coffee and mouth-watering dessert options, this is just the place we were after.
Harbour Town is always busy with families, tourists and friends browsing through the many discount stores and walking out with bags to fill their boot. Many will flock to the food court area, enjoying a coffee with the amazing view over the airport, but I have found this is always the busiest area and sometimes it is hard to find a seat. The Wooden Spoon is situated away from the food court and is a more relaxing, quiet area to enjoy a cuppa.
Knowing we were after dessert, we went straight to that section of the menu but couldn't help double thinking seeing all the delicious focaccias, salads, quiche and savoury food, displayed beautifully on wooden boards in the glass cabinet.
The menu was large and would suit all with savoury and sweet items, breakfast and lunch. When asking Niki, the owner, about her standout menu items, she suggested the roasted chicken with mango chutney and brie on a rosemary and sea salt focaccia. She also said the epic shakes and cookie cone explosion sell themselves and are very popular items. The menu is very affordable with items priced from $6.90 to $20.00 with a kids menu starting from $3.50.
We both ordered the little miss k's lava mountain (Italian doughnut, berry ice-cream, berry coulis, chocolate fudge and pure warm milk chocolate). We were given a cute wooden spoon table number and sat on a small table that was clean and open. We didn't wait long for my coffee and then our food came out presented beautifully on mint green dinnerware. The doughnut was coated in cinnamon sugar and came with warm chocolate on the side for us to drizzle over.
The Wooden Spoon supports South Australia wherever possible with all the bread, focaccia and ice-cream being S.A made. They use South Australian roasters Patios Pioneer beans. The coffee was delightful, smooth and creamy and was a large serving at a great price ($4.00).
It's a small space but was filled with great design, beautiful decor and the aqua/blue tiled wall was a standout feature. There were some comfy lounge chairs, a fireplace and a kids area with pram and trolley space. The kid's area features fun activities to keep children entertained including a chalkboard, kids table, kid's kitchen, toys and books.
Staff were very friendly, efficient and had knowledge of the menu. I will definitely dine here again next time I come to harbour town. There are too many dessert options I want to try out and because Harbour town is huge, what better excuse to fill your system with a sugar hit for your shopping journey.
Year round, they offer 'buy one get one free deals' that you can find on their Facebook and Instagram and seasonally specials. For winter, the Wooden Spoon will be offering some hearty hot soups with warm bread, brownie and coffee deals and 'buy one get one free' waffles!
