Wood Fired Pizzas at Four Winds Vineyard

Four Winds Vineyard is located in the Canberra Wine District in Murrumbateman, 35 minutes north of the CBD. This scenic winery is just one of
33 wineries in the region, however it has an extra feature that the others don't have - wood fired pizzas. Although others may offer cheese platters or more formal restaurant options, wood fired pizzas are always a popular lunch option - especially if you have kids along for the ride. On
weekends only, Four Winds Vineyard has wine tastings between 10am - 5pm and their wood fired pizza oven is firing between 12pm - 3pm.
The vineyard itself was planted 17 years ago with Shiraz, Riesling, Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese and their Cellar Door was completed in 2013. They have used building materials sourced from all around the vineyard to reduce using new materials, so you will see a shipping container and other repurposed items utilised around the property. This popular and family friendly winery is also an attraction on weekends for its large grassy areas for kids to run around on and relaxing country views over the grapes.
Our family have visited this winery a couple of times over the last year and enjoyed the relaxed ambience and pizzas for lunch, whilst exploring the wine region with visitors. On our third visit recently, Four Winds Vineyard had built a large protected area over their back dining area just in time for Summer. The friendly staff told me it has only been up for a couple of weeks and it still needs pavers on the ground, then it will be completely finished. This is going to make this winery even more attractive for locals and visitors to the wine region in the hotter months, with even more shade and tables to choose from.
On the day of our visit, Four Winds Vineyard certainly lived up to its name with strong winds from all directions, so many of the diners moved their tables around to the front of the winery to catch the sun and be protected from the wind. This is also an ideal spot to sit watch the kids play on the grass, whilst keeping an eye on the busy - and impressive - stream of cars coming into the carpark.
Each weekend there are four choices of pizza to choose from - Potato & Gorgonzola, BBQ Chicken, Salami & Black Olives and the fourth pizza is a vegetarian special that changes each month (eg. Kale and Mushrooms). See the Four Winds Vineyard
Facebook for this month's flavour. The BBQ Chicken is a personal favourite with our family and visitors, with delicious cheese and flavours that the kids also like. Each of the small wood fired pizzas cost $17, however kids can also enjoy a plain pizza for $12. To accompany your pizza, you can of course choose a Four Winds wine from their selection, or if you need a break from the wines they also sell local beer, soft drinks and juices to enjoy overlooking the vineyards. If you would like to book a table in advance, see
here .
The Canberra Wine Region has a wide range of Cellar Doors to visit - some are small, boutique-style wineries and there are also larger wineries with extensive ranges. Four Winds Vineyard is somewhere in the middle with welcoming staff, scenic country views, delicious pizzas and even local beers for those who may need a break from wine tasting. If you are looking for a short road trip from the city or a place to stop for lunch whilst out and about exploring, then point your car in the direction of Four Winds Vineyard. This little winery is growing in popularity as time goes by, with its reputation for tasty wines and delicious wood fire pizzas spreading throughout the region.
The word is out - why don't you give it a try this weekend?
