You can't pick wrong from the menu, the options seem endless. All the edible delights are made on premises with love and real ingredients. Wholesome food with lots of flavour will tantalise the taste buds from all day breakfasts such as homemade baked beans with grano, pancakes with cream and berries or creamy porridge with fruit compote, to a lunch menu that offers roast veggie filled crepes, chilli bean pies, homemade soup of the day, smashed avocado and fetta on toast - to mention a few.
The position of the cafe takes you away from the main street hustle and bustle that Healesville can become, especially on a weekend. The cafe is situated at the end of a strip of shops; there is an open backyard so the kids can play and outdoor dining so the adults can sit and relax. The menu also caters for vegans, vegetarians and the gluten intolerant, there is something for everyone.
The small crew of staff are friendly, chatty and passionate about the business and the food. The owners run the kitchen and cook; they are there every day, so you're always getting the best at Wombat's Chai. It is a local favourite thanks to their focus on real food and the relaxed, homely atmosphere. It isn't a big cafe and it's popular, so if you're making the trip out there book a table, you don't want to miss out.
Just a tip: grab a jar of Monica's Jam or Relish (or both), they're infamously delicious. They also have organic seasonal veggies and free range eggs for sale; you will find a small assortment of organic groceries for sale depending on the season.
The drink menu is as equally enticing as the food. The coffee is rich and aromatic; they have a range of teas, fresh juices, smoothies, organic fizzy drinks and of course a killer chai latte. Share a pot of the chai with your friend and you'll have room to squeeze in a dessert.
The cakes, biscuits and slices are a wonderful indulgent to finish off a meal or to simply accompany your coffee. Have that big slice of flourless chocolate cake with house made clotted cream, I certainly won't judge. I've been known to inhale my cake and then finish off Mum's and Dad's too.
Do yourself a favour and get back to real flavour, make yourself at home in the cozy Wombat's Chai café.
