The NSW Woman of the Year: People's Choice – Community Hero award is about women who are local heroes. These are women who have volunteered their time and energy to causes that they are passionate about and have made an outstanding contribution to the community.

If you ever feel that you have something to give to the community but feel that you do not have enough time, read these women's stories and they are sure to inspire you and might just bring a tear to your eye.

The six finalists for this year's award have now been chosen, and they are all remarkable women who have achieved amazing things for their communities and their families. Their stories, their passion and their commitment are outstanding. They include a single mother of premature twins born with Cerebral Palsy who juggled full-time work with countless hours of volunteering for Riding for the Disabled (RDA) NSW; A Murrawarri woman who spent 20 years paving the way for women and children experiencing domestic violence and homelessness to find a better life, helping them turn their lives full circle; A mother who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep the centre, Hear the Children, open, a centre which gave her son and many hearing-impaired babies and preschoolers the gift of speech; A woman who has volunteered in her local community for more than 60 years, including opening her home to strangers during the recent floods; A nurse, lobbyist, chairperson, fundraiser and champion for quality support and care for older people; and a retired teacher of four decades and volunteer who is dedicated to ending gender inequality, helping women in the workforce and inspiring young women to achieve their dreams.

And in my brief narrative, I have still not done justice to the true dedication of these women. I urge you to read their full stories here . You may also vote for the woman you feel is most deserving of the title The NSW Woman of the Year: People's Choice – Community Hero.

But how do you choose between these selfless, tireless women? They all deserve the title of hero.

Voting closes midnight Monday 14 May 2012.
