I don't know how they do it. I don't know why they do it. I just know that those in the know are glad they do it. Quite why Wok Express permanently have their whole menu at 50% off is perplexing but as a marketing ploy, it seems to be a winner. After some five years of permanent discounting, they're still going strong. There are always a few customers, often familiar faces, waiting to pick up their half price meals.
Part of the reason must be cheap rent. Wok Express is located amongst a small cluster of dilapidated looking shops down De Meyrick Avenue in Casula. But I don't let looks put me off, driving to pick up here is a small price to pay for the incredible prices. The compromise, if any, is that the menu is fairly basic with only a mere 79 dishes to choose from.
There's all the standards you would expect; Dim Sims, Prawn Toast, Crab Meat and Sweet Corn Soup and San Choi Bow. There are dishes with Sweet and Sour, Satay, Curry, Black Bean, Szechuan, Garlic, Oyster, Honey and Lemon sauces as well as green and red curries. There's even a half price Seafood Basket and Chicken Schnitzel and Chips.
The dishes could best be described as tasty, dependable and professional Asian cooking. Wok Express modestly describe themselves as having 'The best food and price in town' and 'Fresh, Fast and Delicious'.
But is it really half price or just marketing spin? Well, you can see for yourself. It all depends what you are comparing it against of course but, yeah, I think that most of the dishes are pretty close to half price to any comparable Chinese take-away.
And they're not called 'Wok Express' for nothing. They are very, very quick.
