Local talent, well we'll claim him as a local as he came from England 6 years ago and completed his studies here, Dan Withey is launching his new solo show at Magazine Gallery on Friday the 7th of December.
He says of the exhibition: 'Withey or Withoutey is an exhibition that explores what we have, what we want and what we unknowingly sacrifice to fulfill our desires.'
He believes we have let go of some of what should be our natural attachment to nature and have instead become driven by the desire to obtain material possessions that ultimately leave us unfulfilled and 'missing' something.
His work demonstrates the idea of these missing pieces literally, rather than figuratively as something missing from our soul. Instead of being something that we can't see, his works make these missing pieces tangible (think holes, scars and severed limbs), and this really brings his motivations to the forefront. Sometimes this results in slightly icky images, to use an extremely sophisticated word to describe these depictions.
