My wife and I visited this fantastic little winery nestled in the picturesque valley of Sandy Creek, near Kilcoy. It took me about an hour to reach Winya Wines and the drive out from Brisbane was just as picturesque as the winery itself. Owners Gary (Snow) and Sue Pratten ventured into grape growing in 1997 and their knowledge of wines is fantastic.
The wines are processed off site by winemaker Thomas Honnef from Oceanview Winery, Mt.Mee. He produces eight varieties of superb wines and two varieties of port for Winya Wines. The grapes are grown on the property, and you may even see them being picked. Sue will explain what the process is to produce these fantastic wines for those like myself who have very little knowledge of wine making.
Winya Wines take its name from the pioneer William Butler, the "Grand Old Man of Kilcoy" who was loved and respected in the whole region. Visitors are welcome to visit the cellar door, where you can taste Winya Wines fine wines in a friendly atmosphere whilst taking in the magnificent views. Snow will fire up the barbeque for those wishing to cook up a superb Black Angus steak that you can see wandering around the property, which can be enjoyed with a glass of red.
