The Eltham Bookshop is hosting a special literary event celebrating 'The Wintringham Story' by Elaine Farrelly on Thursday 22nd of May, 2014 from 6;30pm.
'The Wintringham Story' tells the intriguing, moving and sometimes humorous story about the elderly homeless and dedicated team that cares for them.
Thanks to the tireless commitment of Bryan Lipmann, founder of the Wintringham team and his team, the lives of thousands of elderly Melburnians have been transformed.
What was once a dream is now a reality for the Wintringham team as their efforts have led to 1,000 elderly people receiving unique accommodation each night. Wintringham is also the first Australian organisation to be awarded the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award (2011), and yet it remains relatively unknown.
In her book, Elaine Farrelly explores the power of social justice and tracks the journey of one man, Bryan Lipmann, from working in a slaughterhouse in Geraldton to Melbourne's large late night shelters of the 1980s, through to Wintringham today, an organisation that has
cared for thousands of elderly men and women who would otherwise be homeless.
Farrelly comments, "I was compelled to write this book as I felt that Bryan's story was one of real triumph against adversity and a story that should be heard. Bryan took a long-standing issue and addressed it in a novel and, to some, controversial way."
Come along to this special event to find out more about Bryan Lipmann and The Wintringham Team. This event will be introduced by former Federal Minister the Honourable Peter Staples and feature Bryan Lipmann and Elaine Farrelly in conversation.
Seats are limited and early bookings are recommended.
The participation fee is $30 which includes a copy of the book or a $25.00 gift voucher, wine and canapés.
