Adelaide can suffer cold, dark, bleak winters, but it's the perfect excuse to escape the city for with these 5 glorious destinations.

Enjoy!

Eyre Peninsula

Take the scenic coastal drive past the ports - Port Wakefield, Port Pirie, Port Augusta, and many more, to reach Australia's seafood capital.

Marvel at the cuttlefish migration, swim with dolphins, sea lions, and sharks, or tour the bay on a cruiseship.

Venture into a landscape that can be rugged, like a chilled dessert, but also very alive with native wildlife. Hike the stony hills in the Gawler Ranges for the Organ Pipes - a series of giant ancient volcanic rock columns.

In your 4WD, there's no time to die on Sensation Beach at Coffin Bay National Park. Take the sealed road to Golden Island for the dolphin lookout.

Limestone Coast

A short 3-hour drive south to reach Mount Gambier.

Limestone is a food and wine paradise. Shop at Farmers Markets, then sample full-blood wagyu beef at the Mayura Station Tasting Room.

Walk the circumference of Blue Lake, with mirror-like water filling a volcanic crater.

Enter the depths of the ancient World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves for giant fossils.

Immerse yourself in nature within Umpherston Sinkhole, a horticultural wonder borne of a collapsed limestone crater.

Adelaide Hills

Less than an hour outside of town, the Hills offer endless options year-round but they are a very special winter destination.

Visit the source of eternal youth, Jurlique Farm, treating your skin to the unique range of herbs and flowers used to create popular Jurlique beauty products.

Sample a charcuterie of seasonal local produce, fish, and wines at the Summer Town Aristologist.

Check out the winter collection in Hans Heysen's studio, The Cedars. It's hosted in his charming home with peaceful gardens, which were the inspiration for so much of his art.

Kangaroo Island

A scenic 4-hour drive with a bonus ferry ride.

You won't be surprised to spot Skippy on Kangaroo Island, but your heart will beat a little faster at the Raptor Domain. Hold a Wedge-tailed Eagle, handle snakes, and learn about anti-venoms. The centre hosts a safe, unique, and memorable experience. It's a must-do.

Nearby, surf down Little Sahara, the millennia-old sand dunes. You don't need to know how to swim, but you'll be shaking sand out of your pockets if you tumble.

Coober Pedy

Prepare well for the 9-hour drive north into the centre of South Australia.

Shelter during the apocalypse and search for opals at Faye's Underground Home.

Play golf on the course devoid of grass

Find serenity in the Well being Labyrinth.

You're right Barry, winter shouldn't be an impediment to travel. In fact sometimes its and advantage because there are fewer people about.
