It's been hard not to notice the steady arrival of winter in Melbourne and making your way outdoors is becoming a less than pleasant experience. But why let the winter chills ruin your chances of a fabulous weekend. I say yes! – to winter and give you my top 4 top winter warmer ideas for the weekend and the coming School holidays.

1. Embrace the chill and head to the Queen Victoria market.

The Queen Victoria market has long been Melbourne's premier market since 1878 and has earned the right as both a local and tourist icon in Melbourne. With its vast array of stalls selling everything from fine leather goods, toys, underwear, candles, candies, fresh produce, delicatessen products, meats and seafood you can find anything you desire and even a few surprise purchases.

The joy of visiting the Queen Victoria Market in the cooler months is less people traffic and competition for parking and with the market undercover the chill is lessened and the rain kept away. You can peruse the stalls, sample sweets and try on a huge variety of available jackets at a leisurely pace and grab the bargains in the fresh produce area without the throngs of people one might expect in warmer weather.

The Queen Victoria Market trades on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6am to 2pm, Fridays from 6am to 5pm, Saturdays 6am to 3pm and Sundays 9am to 4pm, which is its most popular day with most stalls and sellers open for business.

2. Delight in Children's film at the ACMI cinema at Federation Square.

ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) hosts a Children's film extravaganza over the School holidays with films that will charm children and adults alike.
