In Tasmania they have a nudist swim to celebrate the Winter Solstice (the longest night of the year.) I couldn't think of anything worse. It's cold--give me fire.
And Melbourne does do fire with flare!
Montsalvat in Eltham is again doing their Winter Solstice celebration. They build a towering colossal inferno of a fire. And the setting is amazing, against the gothic almost medieval buildings built by Justus Jorgensen and his colonists back in the 1930s.
The Belgrave Lantern Parade is another gorgeous community event. The 2014 Parade will be held on Saturday June 21st. Music on the street starts at 4pm and the parade starts from Hayes Car Park at 5:30pm, doing a loop of the main street. Spectators can view the parade along the main street between Terry's Avenue and Reynolds Avenue.

There is a lovely Youtube video below which shows just how gentle, folksy and creative this community festival in the hills is.
The well-known Collingwood Children's Farm runs a family bonfire night every year for the winter solstice in their paddock near the stables. There is great food, performers, fire-twirlers and a lantern parade for the kids which is very beautiful to watch. No GlowSticks allowed. Warning, tickets are limited so it might be good to get in early.
