As the above photo shows bonfires are mesmerising. They tend to draw people together into a communal huddle for warmth and comfort.

There is that sense of camaraderie; the leaping flames a focal point of shared togetherness.

Local bonfires were a tradition when I was a kid and now that tradition has returned. There are a growing number of communities now celebrating the Winter Solstice, the longest day of the year with huge, glowing communal fires.
Eltham

This is the second Winter Solstice Bonfire at Montsalvat. Friends who went last year raved about it. There is the dramatic bohemian, almost medieval setting. You can stand by the roaring fire and drink mulled wine as in the days of yore. There is lots of great food, fire twirlers and a lantern parade. Bring a home-made lantern and join in the procession.

At the well loved Collingwood Children's Farm gates will open at 4.30pm with a story time. Then children can carry their home made lanterns in a procession to the bonfire which is lit to the sounds of live music and the antics of spectacular fire twirlers. Activities go until 8.30pm. No glow sticks please. Rug up to keep warm but help is at hand with hot food, mulled wine and piping hot coffee. To book click here .

Brunswick South

Brunswick South Primary School is holding its inaugural Winter Solstice celebration. Let's hope it will become a fixture on the local calendar. The community of some 200 families has been working tirelessly to ensure a great night is had by all. As well as a huge bonfire a feature of the evening will be the food which includes piping hot soup and delicious bread. There will be wine and a bar, plus lots of home-made goodies including cakes. What an enterprising community.

For details see the poster below. To book click here . Children under 12 are free and adults are only $5 with pre-booked tickets.
