Bored kids during the winter and especially the winter school holidays end up skating on thin ice as they drive their parents to distraction. It's all that pent up energy when the skies are dark, the playgrounds waterlogged and there's nothing to do inside.

If this sounds a familiar story in your household then you might want to consider taking the kids to the Medibank Icehouse's Winter Skate Festival and School Holiday program.

I am surprised how much they have on offer . There is a Family Happy Hour every Saturday and Sunday between 12 and 1pm with skates hire available for children as young as 3 years old (smallest size is a 7.)

There is a dedicated rink for beginners and families so they can build in confidence before moving out onto the public rink. There are also free 15 minute beginner lessons led by our experienced Ice Ambassadors as well as skate aids available to use at no extra cost.

Lessons include most of what you need to know such as stomping/walking, balance and stopping, dips, swizzles, gliding and basic backwards skating. And of course that all important skill of how to get up after you fall down

But don't worry you'll look like a professional in no time.

During the school holidays there are also extra free lessons during the week.

There is also an Under 8's Ice Fun – when children under eight and their parents can go on the ice in shoes to gain their confidence and take part in lots of ice play fun. Which sounds like a good starting point for those who like to take things a little slower.

Older teenagers might like the Glow Weekends. Friday nights is HOT 40 which is all the most popular music being played. While Saturday nights are Ice Disco which is all about dressing up preferably in items like affro wigs and flares ( ask your parents who John Travolta was) and making a fun night of it.

Don't forget your socks to wear under your skates

If you have an Entertainment Book it has a voucher which will save you at least $20.
