Cheap (and Free) Winter School Holiday Ideas

So another school term ends, and with chilly and rainy weather it's a bit more challenging to find entertaining things for the kids. Brisbane does offer a range of free and cheap activities to help with the winter school holiday blues. Here are a few ideas.

Chill Out with Brisbane City Council offers a range of activities for young people aged 10 -17.

There is a great range of active and crafty options to suit most tastes. Highlights include active options such as learn to skate and scooter workshops, canoeing, boxing yoga and zumba classes through to creative sessions such as crazy crochet circle, pottery workshops and photography basics. For the future entertainer or artist there are theatre sports and contemporary dance workshops, drawing sessions through to life games and acro-balance sessions. Bookings are essential.

Check our your local library as all libraries offer school holiday activities for free.

These activities are incredibly varied and range from school holiday board games and craft, kaleidoscope making, gardening, collage, diorama making and other crafty sessions, x-box kinect challenges as well as several meet the author events. Library events are great for those cold or wet days so have a look at the website and don't forget to make a booking.

The Insectarium at the Queensland Museum shows kids the world of insects through meeting the scientists who collect and study insects and drawing or making your own insect. Activities are free or by gold coin donation.

Take a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Queensland Museum. For only $10 for kids and $25 for adults you can see the inner workings of the museum and get up close and personal with aspects of the collection. Tours run daily and each tour is unique. If you are a Us/Annual Pass Membership MyMuseum member you receive a 50% discount.

Playing with Light at the Sciencecentre is a full body interactive exhibit that explores lights, lenses, laser beams, telescopes and more.

There are 22 interactive exhibits so your kids can be active while learning. Having been to an interactive light exhibit in New Zealand I can vouch for how much fun and how interesting it is to have to dance or perform certain actions to trigger light and lasers. Entry prices apply but again a MyMuseum membership will really reduce your costs. For more information have a look at the Sciencentre website .

See what's on at your local shopping centre.

It might sounds a bit dull but many shopping centres offer school holiday activities as a way of enticing you into their shops. You can take advantage of these workshops without having a big shopping splurge or maybe just a little splurge by combining a workshop for the kids with a treat lunch. Again this option is ideal for rainy weather. Toowong Village is hosting two workshops, make a biscuit and decorate your own mini house while Westfield Chermside has two interactive zones, Walking with Dinosaurs and Monsters Inc University. Have a look out for what's on at your local centre.
