The school holidays are almost here. Here are 5 activities in and around Melbourne to keep the troops entertained on a budget:

Activities @ the State Library

State Library
Enjoy free school holiday activities at the State Library.

The State Library of Victoria will be putting on a range of free school holiday activities for all age groups. Two activities you can enjoy include:

Dreamtime Stories
Listen to Dreamtime stories told by an indigenous storyteller.
This session occurs on Monday the 2nd of July from 11am until 12pm. It is aimed at children aged 2 to 5. Bookings are not required.

Ned Kelly for Kids
Children will have the opportunity to see Ned Kelly's armour and hear his story. At the end of the session they will make a replica of Ned Kelly's helmet. This workshop will run from 1pm until 2pm on Monday the 2nd, Tuesday the 3rd and Wednesday the 4th of July. It is aimed at children aged 5 to 12. Bookings are not required.

Melbourne Magic Festival
Be prepared to be amazed and astounded at the Melbourne Magic Festival, being held at Northcote Town Hall from the 2nd until the 14th of July. There are over 100 workshops and stage shows. Some events are free, while tickets for others start at a very reasonable $10.

Kids in the Studio Workshops @ ACMI

Enjoy the free "Kids in the Studio

Participate in the free workshop "Kids in the Studio"
being held from Monday the 2nd of July until Friday the 6th of July then again from Monday the 9th of July until Friday the 13th of July in Studio 1 at ACMI. Using green screen technology children will have the opportunity to be the star of their very own video game. The sessions run for 45 minutes and begin at 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. Bookings need to be made at ACMI in person on the day. After the workshop you can head to the free Screenworlds exhibition.

Mesopotamia Exhibition and Activities @ the Melbourne Museum Discover the ancient world of Mesopotamia at the Melbourne Museum. Entry and participation in the activities for children, students and senior citizens is free. Tickets for adults are $10. The three school holiday activities include:

The Wonders of Ancient Mesopotamia Exhibition
Explore wonderful artifacts from one of the world's great ancient civilizations. The exhibition is being held until the 7th of October 2012.

Welcome to Mesopotamia Family Presentation
A show introducing the facts about Ancient Mesopotamia in a kid friendly way. This presentation occurs daily from the 30th of June until the 15th of July at 11.30am, 1.00pm and 2.00pm in the Museum Theatre.

Mini Meso Workshops
Children will have the opportunity to create their own wall relief using pictures of reliefs from the Assyrian Palaces for inspiration. This session runs daily between 11am and 3pm from the 30th of June until the 15th of June.

Kids Footy Forum @ Queen Victoria Market

Head along to the Kids Footy Forum @ The Queen Vic Market

Bring the kids along to the free Kids Footy Forum at the Queen Victoria Market. The forums will occur on Tuesday the 3rd of July and Thursday the 5th of July between 10am and 12pm in L Shed. On Tuesday Drew Petrie from North Melbourne and Angus Monfries will be on the panel while on Thursday Leigh Montagna from the St Kilda Football Club and Jack Trenggove from the Melbourne Football Club will be in attendance. There will be a handball competition on both days.

After you have been to the forum you can explore the market and then head to bargain block.
