New Zealand is not really renowned for sunny Winters, and especially the Manawatu, but I was blessed with glorious clear days on my last visit to the region's main city, Palmerston North.

Best known as a student city, with Massey University, UCOL & IPC, Palmerston North is situated inland on the banks of the Manawatu River. A relatively flat city, Palmerston North, and the Manawatu in general, is ideal for walking and cycling, with designated pathways across the region.

On this, my most recent visit to the city, I made the most of the Winter sun by walking through the Victoria Esplanade, taking the Red route.

This route includes remnants of native Manawatu Plains bush and the Manawatu River. Along the path you will find manicured gardens, the Arboretum, Bird Aviary and Cafe. In the Summer months the RSA Paddling Pool is very popular with infants - even way back when I was a toddler in the 1960's!

The Victoria Esplanade Walks can all be accessed from Victoria Esplanade Drive where there is ample free parking, or from Dittmer Drive on the riverside path.
