When great minds meet, magic happens. The collaboration between The Emerson at South Yarra and Susie Wong at Windsor, brought together the two opposing sides of Chapel street under the one roof. To be exact, the rooftop; and the night went off with a BANG!

Banging attendance, banging food, drinks and atmosphere; without a doubt, thanks to the great promotion by the dynamic Sara of Inka Marketing, Communications & Events. Like a good hostess, she mingled and made sure everyone she managed to chat to in the timeframe, was happy and felt welcomed.


Winter In Asia is a 6 weeks long series that runs from Friday 15 July to Sunday 28 August 2016, open for dinner after 5pm Thursday to Sunday, and lunch after 12pm Friday to Sunday. Booth bookings available: (03) 9825 0900 or social@theemerson.com.au

Enjoy touches of Asia at the Emerson Rooftop (145 Commercial Rd, South Yarra), as the ceilings are bathed in cherry blossom pink like lighting and softly draped fine fabrics. Paper lanterns of various colours and sizes hang from the ceiling, as cherry blossom flowers hug the posts in the room. For those inclined towards taking selfies, there's a 'Winter In Asia' promotion board, covered with little origami paper cranes at one end of the room.


For your eating pleasure, the six week menu will consist of 'small grazing' like spring rolls, dumplings, pulled pork bao and baby banh mi. The larger grazing plates are a selection of tempura, Angus beef meat balls and crispy chicken wings.

There's a choice of three for mains, which are five spice pork belly, slow braised beef cheek and an Asian salad. You can also get teppanyaki skewers of seared Angus beef, Cambodian chicken tenderloins and garlic king prawns. There are always sides and that's when you get to add that extra steamed rice, sweet potato fries or a warm asian salad.


If you still have room to fill, for those with a sweet tooth, there's coconut pudding, vanilla panna cotta and a chocolate fondant.

Don't forget the Dump DV Challenge each Thursday for a $25 entry fee. This is the Emerson's way of helping to dump domestic violence... via dumplings. All proceeds go towards the Face Up to DV Appeal which was launched by Jimmy Bartel in partnership with the Geelong Football Club. It's a win-win situation if you can eat 20 dumplings within 2 minutes. That'll win you an entry into the overall competition to win a trip to Japan.

The taster menu on the night for invited guests and media consisted of pulled pork pineapple relish, scallop prawns, rockling tempura, pork belly, chicken skewers and baby meat balls along with a couple of alcoholic drink creations by the barmen, both green tea based. The one I tried with vodka and ginger sure packed a punch and seemed the popular choice of many.


The taster morsels in a filled to capacity room, disappeared as fast as they came out. I managed to grab a rockling tempura before heading out the door to come home. It was fresh, delicious and crisp.

The actual Winter In Asia full sized dishes the media photographed included the scallop, prawn & goji berry siu mai with black vinegar dressing; pork, cabbage & garlic chive gyoza with Sichuan pepper soy dressing; skewered garlic king prawns with three chilli nahm jim and an asian salad; king prawn, rockling, shitake & sweet potato with wasabi mayo & pickled ginger; prawn, sweet corn & spring onion with green chilli nuoc cham; Angus beef panko meat balls with sakura chizu, tomato & wasabi mayo; crispy five spice pork belly with chilli caramel with apple & radish salad; a warm asian salad; delicious looking meat balls and rockling sliders with salad; the buns baked in-house by Susie Wong.

The menu curated by Susie Wong is bound to please and it's up to their restaurant standard. A breath of change from the regular menu gives regular punters of the Emerson a little something different to look forward to.
