Get your skates on these school holidays and head down to Fremantle's inaugural Winter Festival , running for the first time in Western Australia after successful events in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne since 2009.

The Esplanade Reserve will be hosting one of the largest open air ice rinks in the Southern Hemisphere with loads of ice cool events and great entertainment for all ages. There will be fun food options, live music and international DJ's to soundtrack your skating and for adults, a fully licensed bar.

Attracting around 30,000 visitors at each East Coast location last year, Perth now gets a chance to have it own West Coast Winter Festival. Heaps of exciting events are planned including ice hockey demonstrations; VIP functions featuring celebrities and local Perthonalities; a Junior Sports club day on Saturday, 14 July providing amazing entertainment and special discounts for sports clubs; and a Superheroes Party on Saturday, 21st July – on from midday for families and also later for older kids and adults. Free drink cards will be given to the 50 best dressed throughout the day and the first 50 people dressed to impress on the ice at each party get a free hot chocolate or Gluhwein (mulled wine).

The Fremantle Winter Festival will run for three weeks from Friday, 6th – Sunday, 22nd July with the ice skating rink open from 12pm – 10pm every weekday and 10am – 10pm on the weekends. Each skating session includes skates and is 45 minutes with sessions starting every hour on the hour. While an outdoor rink means that it will be subject to the varying climate and ground conditions, the rink can operate in nearly all weather conditions - just make sure you rug up and wear clothes and shoes to take any inclement forecasts into account. There will be lockers available on site for you to house your belongings while you're on the ice.

The Esplanade Reserve is walking distance from the Fremantle Train Station and the local CAT (a free bus service) runs on a regular schedule during the week and on weekends with stops close by.

The venue recommends that you get there 30 minutes before your session to be fitted for ice skates, and don't worry; there are many sizes available to hire for both kids and adults. Bring your own skates if you have them, just have the site check them over to make sure they're okay to go on the rink.

Function packages are also available for larger groups and if you don't really feel like skating, just head down to enjoy the atmosphere, the food and drink stalls and any entertainment on the day as entry to the site is free.

Find the ticket office on the Esplanade Reserve, but if you want to guarantee your spot, you can book your sessions online . Special skating packages are only available to be booked online.
