With only one week to go until winter officially hits Australia, it's all too tempting to fight the chilly Melbourne weather and curl up inside. But a wise man once said that there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. So with that in mind, rug up warmly and get yourself to one of these wintry wonders; embrace the season!

  • Falls Creek Ice Plunge**
  • Okay, this is pure madness and not for the faint-hearted (and goes totally against my previous advice about rugging up). The Falls Creek Ice Plunge is exactly what the name suggests – plunging oneself into the ice-cold waters of Rocky Valley Lake in a bid to please the snow gods and ensure good snowfalls for the ski season. It's all in a good cause as any money raised goes to Fight MND; a charity working on cures for motor neurone disease. Full details can be found here .

    • Giant Snow Dance Festival
    Dance your way into winter with the Snow Dance Festival at Dinner Plain Alpine Village. DJ Eddy will be playing a host of hot tunes so you can throw some shapes on the dance floor, and there will be plenty of hot snacks and drinks to keep you toasty. The dance floor in question happens to be the Dinner Plain roundabout in Victoria's High Country. Dancing will start at 5:00pm with fireworks at 6:15pm, and don't forget to check out the bargains at local ski retailers.

    * White Night Melbourne Reimagined
    As winter comes to a close, three of Melbourne's inner city parks will be lit up for three nights, as a prelude to spring. From Thursday 22nd August until Saturday 24th August, Birrarung Marr, Carlton Gardens and Treasury Gardens will provide a feast for the senses. Final details are yet to be revealed but artists from across the city will unveil awe-inspiring works of art for the public to experience, with some unique twists on the last few White Nights. Stay informed here .

    • Winter Solstice Festival 2019
    Edendale Farm is a community-run farm in Eltham. It plays host to this huge annual solstice event which all of the family will enjoy. The main event is a lantern parade culminating in the lighting of a huge sculptural bonfire. There is also live music, food and drink, pony rides and fire entertainers. If that sounds like your kind of winter fun, the action is taking place on Saturday, 22 June 2019 from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM. More details can be found here .

    There are plenty of reasons here for a winter knees-up, so don't hide away; channel your inner Jack Frost and embrace the wonder of winter.
