When venturing up to the far north west of Victoria, you expect the heat and red dust. There is certainly plenty of both. The usual rainfall is pretty meagre and water supply from the rivers is hotly contested.

Water is pretty much like gold in this area and almost as expensive.

It's quite a surprise then to find there are cool aquatic oases among the wheat-and-sheep-laden landscapes. Some of these bodies of water exist subject to weather conditions and rainfall. Many are helped along by the hard work and commitment of communities who have done whatever it takes to fill their local lake, pond or basin with well, water, for the benefit of locals and visitors alike.

We camped at two of the lakes (they would also be good spots for a picnic). Green Lake (near Sea Lake and just down the road from picturesque and wildly popular with overseas tourists Lake Tyrrell ) was home for several nights.

Green Lake is surrounded in the main by sandy beaches and low woodlands. Perfect for camping, swimming and kayaking and the word is that power boats may be accommodated in the future. Facilities include toilets and showers. There's a walking path around the lake and bushwalking in the adjacent reserve.

Further south is Wooroonook Lake , just out of Charlton. There are powered and unpowered sites and swimming, boating and fishing on the lake. Other facilities include a playground, toilets and showers and BBQs. It was fairly busy the night we stayed so you'd probably need to get in early if you wanted to stay at popular times.

Both of these camping grounds are pet-friendly (take your leash and doggy-doo bags) and fires may be allowed (subject to all the appropriate fire restrictions and rules). You might see a ranger or caretaker but it seems to be that payment can be made via honesty box and you'll need cash for that so come prepared. These camps have some powered sites, however, if you don't have this requirement, there is quite a lot of freedom in your choice of site. Lovely!

The silo art trail is not too far distant from the above locations.

But wait, there's more! Quite a few more water views are available in the Wimmera Mallee. Here's a handy list just in case you'd like to find your own.
