Heritage Slate Stories
Willunga has a long and strong pioneer history of slate production that continues to this day. As part of the 2017 History Festival this pioneer history will be celebrated and examined in some unique events. Visitors will hear of the trials and tribulations, friendships and hardships of this pioneer township while exploring the places, cemetery and quarry of today. Solving the Mysteries
Take a tour back in time to 19th century Willunga when local slate carvers created today's rich legacy of slate carvings and gravestones, mantelpieces and decorative arts. What questions do these artifacts raise about Willunga? There are many stories to be uncovered about society, religion, and the slate carvers themselves. Participants will hear about the troubles and mishaps, the German influence, and what to make of the unsigned gravestones.

Ghosts of Willunga's Past
Tour Willunga's St Stephen's Anglican Cemetery in Aldinga Road. Participants will hear stories of heroism, self-sacrifice and grief. Stories will be told of friendships and families, and lives of service. A chance to find out more about Willunga's slate gravestones, and discover the characters and conflicts of Willunga's fascinating past.

Willunga Slate: How it was Quarried: How it was worked
Bookings are essential for this guided tour.
Willunga slate, discovered in 1840, has been quarried locally ever since: combine a visit to the National Trust's Slate Museum
with a guided tour of an historic slate quarry (weather permitting).

Heritage Willunga
Willunga was first settled in 1839. Visitors can explore this heritage at Willunga's National Trust's Courthouse Museum which enables visitors to enter the past. There is also a self-guided walk which shows the varied uses of slate in and around the town of Willunga. See early quarrymen's cottages,
slate fences, the Slate House and much more.



Willunga will also host Discover Willunga on May 7. This is an opportunity to learn about this delightful heritage community of the Fleurieu.
