Anything like rainforest can be hard to come by, but in the I was thrilled to see ferns and vines and hear a whip bird sound off right above me. A 1.3 kilometre walk, named the Great Short Walk, through the forest loops back into the park. The vegetation is growing naturally, not planted by human hands. You'll see bracken ferns, gum trees and tree ferns. The trail itself has gentle hills with mostly scree surface. There is a stretch of 50 metres of bitumen along the way. At Reis Road, the track crosses a metal bridge. As well as the bushland, you will encounter a grassy area behind adjacent backyards.

A variety of birds can be heard and seen. Many native wildlife species, butterflies and dragonflies are also prolific. Klein Creek is sadly dry at present, but once it rains, the forest will be even more beautiful. And this summer, Australia is expecting much rain. The walk runs to the corner of Reis and O'Briens Roads, following the stream. The walk is listed as Grade 2, taking approximately 55 minutes.

is a heavenly retreat, bringing a feeling of peace and wellbeing. Discovering this haven will bring you back for return visits. It would be a great way to introduce children to a rainforest environment without travelling long distances to find one. Situated in Highfields, a 20 minute drive north of Toowoomba, it's a delightful place to recharge the batteries. Undercover picnicking and a playground are other assets of the park.

Cecil Crescent and Mavis Court have the best parking. To get there, turn off the New England Highway onto Highfields Road, turn right onto Kuhls Road, then left into Cecil Crescent. Other facilities: toilets and drinking water. A map is available.
