It's novel, romantic and a little cultured. As you wind your way down from the carpark, the smell of gum trees permeates the setting - enter a whole new world where dreams are made. What more could you want on a balmy midsummer's night? **

Introduced by the mayor of Maribyrnong as a significant Arts event for the City of Maribyrnong, A Midsummer Night's Dream is the first of many planned Shakespeare plays to be performed in the park.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a renowned comedy play believed to have been written in the late 1500s by no other than the revered William Shakespeare. The play is one of his most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world and now it is here at sunset on the picturesque riverbanks of the heritage listed Pipemaker's Park. There's no need to worry about the weather, there is a rain contingency plan.

The play portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and Hippolyta. These include the adventures of young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals). Throwing caution to the wind as young lovers do, they follow their hearts and into a mystical forest full of intrigue and danger. Who can resist a love story enchanted by danger, disobedience and laughter?

A Midsummer Night's Dream has incredibly predictable enduring popularity - after all it's about the world's favourite pastimes - falling in love. This is a timeless and seductive theme with an often unheeded warning about a love and foolishness.

In association with The Living Museum of The West and The Maribyrnong City Council, Sly Rat Theatre Co. and their cohort of fauns, faeries, lovers, and a lion are bringing magic and mayhem to Melbourne's Western Suburbs. I'm sure the residents will be thrilled to know that the mayhem is of the fun type!

This is free and set to be one of the hottest Melbourne's summer Arts calendar events. Pack your picnic blanket, the bubbles and a picnic hamper. Lie back with friends and family to enjoy this fun and saucy romantic comedy that examines issues of duty and desire. Fall in love with this performance – it's suitable for all ages and designed especially for Shakespeare lovers.

The Sly Rat Theatre Co. has assembled a passionate and commanding ensemble to breathe new life and frivolity into this timeless classic! Be ready for an energetic mixture of song, rap and story. A Midsummer Night's Dream Stars some of Melbourne's finest independent performers: Brendan Ewing as the mischievous faun, Puck. Zak Zavod as Oberon, the King of the Faeries. Katharine Moss as the forbidding Faerie Queen, Titania. Katharine Innes, Hannah Bolt, Leticia Sutherland and Seton Pollack as as the mystified lovers.

Alan Chambers, and playwright, Andy Harmsen, direct this immortal tale of love, romance, magic, and temptation. Their adaptation is not to be missed. They prove that there are fairies in the park and a little bit of magic.

The performance is suitable for the whole family. And what's more - there will be free face painting for the kids from 5.30 onwards. Food and beverages are available and the event is BYO and fully licensed. The Sly Rat Theatre Co. encourages VCE students studying the works of William Shakespeare to attend.

Dream on!
