It's not often that a compendium has you so captivated that you polish it off in a day or two. Any eager food writer will want to devour Dianne Jacob's Will Write For Food in one go, while still referring back to it countless times later. It is a bible for anyone interested in food writing, how to get into it, and how to get better at it.

Dianne Jacob is a writer and author, and has been writing about food since 1978. She's reviewed restaurants, written recipes, profiled chefs, co-authored a cookbook, and now she even has her own food writing blog . Will Write For Food doesn't only include Dianne Jacob's own insights, but those of professionals and experts in the many fields that involve food writing.

The book starts with the basics. What is food writing? What makes someone a food writer? How on earth do I get started? From there things get specific, and Dianne provides detailed information about blogging, freelancing, restaurant reviewing, cookbooks, recipe writing, memoir and non fiction, and even writing about food in fiction. Even if you're only interested in one particular aspect of food writing, it's worthwhile pouring through the entire book at least once.

In the most recent edition there is an updated section on food blogging, which makes sense considering not only the growing number of food blogs, but also the growing number of opportunities available for bloggers. Tips cover how to get started, how to grow your readership, the sticky question of sponsorship, and even photography tips.

Will Write For Food does not claim to be the miracle cure for all your food writing woes. It doesn't promise a life filled with riches and endless good meals, and it doesn't claim to turn you into an instant success; it does offer good advice and tips that many already established writers wished they had when they started out.

Whether you're dreaming of publishing your own cookbook, writing about food for fun, or trying to kickstart your freelance food writing career, you'll find some useful bit of information to help you along the way.

To whet your appetite for more reading here a few tips to get you started:

1. Stop calling food amazing, delicious, and tasty. Instead write about food that is plump, popping, alluring, velvety, bubbling and satisfying. (there's a whole list of adjectives included that are useful for food writers)

2. If you only ever write about things you love, no one will bother reading. They already know you'll love it.

3. Eat, eat, eat.

If you can't find Will Write For Food in your local bookshop chances are you'll be able to buy it from any online book retailer.
