Will Love in Spring – TV Series Review


Adapted from the novel Lover by She Mu Si, Will Love in Spring (2024) is a Chinese drama with 21 episodes. This TV series is about Chen Maidong, a mortician, who decided to work in this industry after witnessing his best friend die before his eyes after a fight. Chen Maidong and his best friend were only 17 years old at that time and this experience cemented in his memory and he carries it all through his life. He learns everything from a man who works at a funeral parlour and at that time helping at the funeral of his best friend. Chen Maidong become a name in this industry and a lot of people choose to use the funeral home where Chen Maidong works to help them with their loved ones who pass away.

One day, on a train that brought him back to his hometown, Nanping, Chen Maidong met his former high school classmate, Zhuang Jie. Zhuang Jie is a senior technical sales at a big medical company in Shanghai. She decided to go back to her hometown after having her gallbladder surgery and decided to take a rest after the surgery with her family. Chen Maidong pretended that he didn’t recognise Zhuang Jie and tried his best to avoid her.

They met again when Zhuang Jie delivered chicken from her mother's restaurant to a funeral dinner where Chen Maidong assisted this family with the funeral. Chen Maidong’s grandma, who was at the funeral as well, really likes Zhuang Jie and since then tried her best to become a matchmaker for her grandson Zhuang Jie.

Working at a funeral home and dealing with death quite often makes Chen Maidong not interested in pursuing a love life. On the other side, Zhuang Jie who had her right leg amputated after a car incident that killed her father, also had no luck with her love life. Even though they both seemed attracted to each other after several encounters in their home town, their past hindered them from opening their heart to each other and even Zhuang Jie decided to go back to Shanghai.

Three months later, Zhuang Jie went back to Nanping after receiving news that her stepfather was killed in an accident at the factory where he worked. Zhuang Jie's family used Chen Maidong's funeral parlour to help with the funeral. Zhuang Jie and Chen Maidong met again.

Will Love in Spring is a slow-burn drama, but every episode tells you a story about Chen Maidong’s and Zhuang Jie’s past lives that make their present lives. It tells you their worry and hope and slowly how they find solutions for obstacles in their lives.

Li Xian as Chen Maidong and Zhou Yu Tong as Zhuang Jie bring their character alive and you can see a very good chemistry of acting between them. Completed with a very interesting original soundtrack, this TV series will give you a new meaning of death and losing someone that you love.
