Oyster Reef Restoration in Pumistone Passage.



On Tuesday the 26th of November 2019 at 7.30 pm, join Brisbane Branch of Wildlife Queensland for this free public lecture followed by a Xmas supper. No need to book, just come along.

When Greek Migrants opened the first oyster bars in Sydney and then in many other parts of Australia, oysters were as cheap as chips. Incredibly plentiful, very popular with the locals and a good source of nourishment and reasonably priced. What has happened since those early years in the 20th century?

Oysters are no longer widespread, in fact they have been completely eliminated from many areas.

Join marine biologist Dr Ben Diggles as he dives into the marine ecosystem of Moreton Bay and explores the role of shellfish reefs for improving fisheries, water quality and biodiversity.

Unfortunately, shellfish reef ecosystems are now functionally extinct in Moreton Bay as well as many other estuaries along Australia's east coast.

Dr Diggles will present results from a shellfish reef restoration trial that is underway in Pumicestone Passage that shows great promise to help reverse this worrying trend of underwater ecosystem decline in Moreton Bay.
